Losing Our Civil Rights - Supreme Court Kills Affirmative Action.

Supreme Court Affirmative Action

Our Statement on the Supreme Court's Affirmative Action Ruling

June 29th, 2023 - The Supreme court struck down affirmative action in the case, Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College.

The nonprofit, Students for Fair Admissions sued Harvard University, claiming that affirmative action in college admissions was unconstitutional. The court decided that affirmative action violates the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

This ruling by the court is an act to move the nation to a “colorblind” society. This desire for colorblindness, is one that avoids systemic accountability for institutional oppression. Color Blindness cannot happen until accountability and restoration have taken place. There has been no collective accountability and mass equity efforts made by The United States to atone for its abhorrent history of racism. Affirmative action was a systemic accountability effort.

It acknowledged the fact people of color have had several barriers impacting their educational outcomes and gave some recognition to this by factoring in race to college admissions. This was undergirded by the fact that it is widely known that education can improve life outcomes for an individual and the generations that follow. Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College Halts the progressive efforts made via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and is sure to lower minority admissions in colleges and universities.

Just days ago the court was applauded for its decision in Moore v Harper. This hot and cold with the court demonstrates the dangers of 9 unelected justices having this much power over the daily lives of Americans. This decision, along with countless others, such as the Dobbs v Jackson, sparks questions of the court's legitimacy. Moving forward, we must ask ourselves whether these institutions serve us as marginalized peoples, and if not, how can we create new and better institutions moving forward.

SisterLove supports the rights of the people to education, employment, and all other tenets of a healthy and secure life. This decision stands in direct opposition of marginalized peoples existence and progression in this country.
