The Supreme Court's Decision to Extinguish Constitutional Guarantee to Accessing Legal Abortions
Today, the Supreme Court made the decision to overturn the legal precedent protecting the constitutional guarantee to accessing legal abortions. This has a lasting impact on the human and civil rights of birthing people.
Before the leak, it was clear that we were on a downward spiral in terms of reproductive rights, gender oppression, and the protection of our bodily autonomy and legal access to abortion. This is especially true for Black folk, as existing governing structures have not been effective in protecting our rights or autonomy. We are constantly fighting against a host of -isms, including sexism, racism, and imperialism. This decision is just another example of the ongoing violence against Black bodies.
Without access to abortion, many lives will be devastated. It is important to recognize that this impact will be felt by all pregnant people, including trans or nonbinary individuals, Indigenous people, Latinx people, Asian/Pacific Islander people, and any pregnant person. The restrictions, lack of access, and illegal opportunities for abortion services will have exponential effects.
This country is not prepared for the public health impact and damage that this Court is causing, not just to the pregnant person but also to their families, communities, and the democracy of this country. We mourn with the people of not only Mississippi, but all over the nation. At SisterLove, we will continue to fight for a future in which we are fully liberated. We will not stop fighting until Reproductive Justice is the law of the land.
SisterLove, Inc. has been fighting for the reproductive health and rights of women and birthing persons for over 33 years. Despite this historic setback, we will continue to fight, mobilize, and fiercely advocate for abortion access for all. Join our coalition today.
