Although election day has come and gone, Georgia voters still have work to do in the upcoming run-off races for Georgia’s two Senate seats. One runoff election is between incumbent Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) and Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock. The other is between incumbent David Purdue (R-GA) and Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff. The races are ongoing because neither incumbent received enough votes for a clear win,
These races are important because the Georgia races could determine the majority party in the Senate. If both seats go to the challengers, Democrats will become the Senate majority. If both incumbents win their seats, the Senate will remain predominantly Republican.
A Democratic Senate would more easily allow President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris to push forward their agenda, which includes protecting the American Care Act (Obamacare) and protecting reproductive rights.
Although many voters are wary after a long election last week and election result disputes this week, it is extremely important for you to vote in the upcoming Senate races. The deadline to register to vote in the runoff race is December 7, 2020. Early registration begins on December 14, 2020, and the general election takes place on January 5, 2021.
