SisterLove's Statement on the Charges Filed in the Death of Breonna Taylor

On September 23, 2020, Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced the grand jury decision in the shooting death of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor. The grand jury only indicted one of the three officers involved for wanton endangerment for allegedly damaging a wall during the shooting. No charges were filed for her actual death.

Once again, the American judicial system has failed to right an egregious wrong. We are heartbroken and angered by the decision, but sadly unsurprised by this result. This decision comes exactly 65 years after Emmett Till’s murderers were exonerated by a Mississippi jury for his brutal slaying . This system was not designed to protect Black people, and yesterday’s indictment highlights the injustices Black people continue to endure. We all could have been Breonna.

SisterLove calls for the police officers involved to be prosecuted for her death. Breonna Taylor deserved to live. She deserved to be safe in her home. She still deserves justice. We cannot give up this fight and we will not. We will continue to lift up Breonna Taylor's name and her story and demand justice for Black women until no others fall to police violence.

The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman." -Malcolm X
