SisterLove, Inc Statements: President Biden Nominates Ketanji Brown-Jackson to the Supreme Court

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

Making History

Today, President Biden announced that he intends to nominate Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson to the Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Brown-Jackson would become the first Black female Supreme Court Justice.

A Record of Excellence

Ketanji Brown-Jackson is an esteemed graduate of Harvard Law School. She clerked under current Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, who is known as the court’s most senior liberal member. She used to work as a public defender and is currently serving on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and has been on that post since 2013.

Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson’s record from her tenure as a judge on the federal district court in Washington, points towards a potentially more progressive approach to hot-button issues like immigration.

During Trump’s presidency, Judge Brown-Jackson blocked then President Trump’s plan to expedite fast-track deportations by expanding the category of undocumented immigrants eligible for said deportations. Her decision was later overruled by the DC circuit where they disagreed “with her that the DHS secretary’s decision to expand fast-track deportations was the type of policy change that fell under the APA.”

Celebrating Black Herstory

We at SisterLove applaud President Biden for taking this monumental step in the right direction by nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court. We join many different reproductive justice organizations in celebrating this nomination! We are hopeful that the addition of Judge Ketanji Brown-Jackson to the Supreme Court will bring us one step closer to making sure that all people of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences are considered and that the fundamental rights and freedoms of all people are protected.
