SisterLove Statements: Supporting Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

The Senate has confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Judge Jackson’s confirmation as the first Black woman to sit on the Supreme Court has been a historic journey.

Black women were once defined as less than human, once denied the right to vote, the right to be lawyers, and now a Black woman sits on the highest Court in our nation.

After surviving the inquisition during her confirmation hearing these past weeks, Black women everywhere have been waiting anxiously. Her experience felt like the lived experience of many Black women in workspaces where they faced the denial of their qualifications and credentials, the hostile scrutiny, it was traumatizing to witness.

Black women have been and continue to be integral pieces of this nation’s democracy and stability. We must not be excluded from positions of power any longer.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has made history as the first Black female justice on the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest judicial body in the United States and leads the judicial branch of the federal government. Justice Jackson is one of three Black justices to be on the Supreme Court ever.

It took 115 prior justices for us to get a Black woman nominated for the highest court.

They praised her character and composure but didn’t question her steady resolve. Why was she able to handle the onslaught of questions with such grace? Probably because this day wasn’t too different from her journey that led her to this very place.

The discrediting of her skills, knowledge and experience, the constant need to explain her qualifications, and to remain calm while under attack, this is the story of many Black women. The way we gather patience and strength to muster up a side of grace.

Justice Jackson is set to be sworn in after Breyer’s current term ends. We at SisterLove would like to acknowledge her with her locs, credentials, and grace. She is the living epitome of poise, an inspiration to little Black girls and people everywhere.

She has our unequivocal support in her tenure as a Supreme Court Justice.

This nomination and confirmation is the result of hard work and dedication on the part of Justice Jackson. She is a qualified woman of integrity and we trust that she will uphold the rule of law.

When we say “representation matters” this is what we mean. Justice Jackson’s experience within our legal system speaks for itself. This nomination and confirmation is long overdue. As women, lawyers, policy advisors, activists, and advocates we appreciate her work and find ourselves in her success. Our newest Justice is a trailblazer and an inspiration.

This is the first step toward a more equitable Court and system.

SisterLove congratulates Judge Jackson for making history as the first black woman to sit on the highest court in the land!
