Biden Selects Kamala Harris as Vice Presidential Candidate

Updated: Aug 15, 2020

Today, Joe Biden announced that his running mate for the upcoming Presidential election would be Senator Kamala Harris. Senator Harris is the first African American woman to ever be on a major political party’s presidential ticket.

Regardless of your politics, this is a great moment for Black women everywhere. Black women have long been the backbone of many political movements and are consistently engaged and participants of the political process. It is vital that their voices are heard and we hope that Vice Presidential Candidate Harris works both during the election cycle and possibly in the White House for the issues that Black women face across the country. We at SisterLove recognize she stands on the shoulders of Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and others who stood up and dared to share their vision of what Black feminism in politics could and should look like today.

Black women have always been political drivers at the polls, partly because our issues are in fact, human rights issues and must be kept at the forefront of every election until we are heard. We also must note that an unprecedented number of women of color are running for Congress this year. We wish them and Senator Harris well on the campaign trial.

Please remember to vote in the upcoming election. Voting is a powerful tool to make our democracy better and more equal for everyone.

You can register to vote in Georgia here, by October 5, for the November election.
