Policy and Advocacy

Since its inception, SisterLove, Inc. has been at the forefront of community-based advocacy for the health, well-being, and human rights of Black women living with HIV/AIDS, those at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS, and for all individuals who belong to marginalized communities that are severely and disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS, especially in the Deep South and Global South. Historically, we have focused our advocacy efforts on cisgender women of color in the African diaspora. However, we are expanding our advocacy vision, outreach, and service provision to better meet the needs of transgender and gender variant individuals, and lesbian, bisexual, gay, and queer-identified youth, women, and men.

We approach our HIV advocacy as a matter of human rights and Reproductive Justice. We apply a Reproductive Justice lens in the way we conceptualize HIV policy issues and innovate community-based solutions to those issues from the grassroots up. In order to meaningfully address the impacts of HIV/AIDS on women of color, we center the experiences of those directly impacted by the epidemic and the social determinants of health that shape sexual and reproductive health outcomes.

To this end, SisterLove works in four broad advocacy areas, including:

We advance our objectives under these advocacy areas by: conducting stakeholder and community engagement and education at local, state, and national levels; building power among our base of women and youth; working in coalition with community partners and allies at local, state, and national levels; amplifying our experiential perspectives and policy positions through traditional and social media; and collaborating with community partners to produce intersectional policy writing that utilizes Reproductive Justice and human rights frameworks, intended for use by all who have a stake in our advocacy objectives.
